how to pan-fry tofu:

INGREDIENTS
For the crispy tofu
-1 block extra-firm tofu, cubed
-1/3 cup cornstarch
-oil for frying
For the orange sauce
-1/2 cup water
-1 heaping tablespoon cornstarch
-1/2 cup orange juice
-zest of one medium orange
-1/3 cup brown sugar
-1/3 cup soy sauce
-1/4 cup white vinegar
-1 teaspoon sesame oil
-1 tablespoon minced garlic
-1 teaspoon ginger paste

DIRECTIONS
1. Pour cornstarch into a wide shallow dish and toss tofu to coat. Allow tofu to sit in cornstarch while you prepare the sauce.
2. Combine water and cornstarch. Whisk in the rest of the sauce ingredients.
3. Heat sauce ingredients to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and allow to simmer until sauce reaches desired thickness. (This happens fast so keep an eye on it.)
4. Heat 1/8" of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add tofu and pan-fry until light golden-brown, flipping tofu every few minutes to crisp all sides. Set aside on a paper towel to blot excess oil. (Hold in a 200°F oven to keep crisp if planning to serve later.)
5. Toss crispy tofu with desired amount of sauce. (You will most likely have extra sauce. This can be saved in an airtight container and used later.)
Note: If you think you'll have leftovers, keep the tofu and sauce separate until you serve it. The tofu can be crisped again in an oven or air-fryer later.

Bethy Childress says:

Amazing, can’t wait to try this! I tried your other crispy tofu and everyone loved it!!!!

Sunny N says:

That crunch sounds so good. Also, Orange chicken is not a thing in UK.. Will have to try this…

Sunny N says:

Thedollydevine I’ve never seen it as an option in any restaurant…. Though I haven’t been to all of the London ones…

Sarah's Vegan Kitchen says:

Really!? It’s super popular here, I think all mostly because of Panda Express.

Sunny N says:

Sarah’s Vegan Kitchen we don’t have that chain here…. Must be in some takeaways here though. Popular ones are salt and pepper chicken, sweet and sour chicken, black bean sauce chicken and szechuan chicken….. Though chilli paneer and Chilli chicken were my favourite Indo-Chinese dishes 😀

Vault 703 Overseer says:

+Sarah’s Vegan Kitchen Panda Express didn’t exist outside of California for a long time. Orange chicken’s popularity rose with General Tso’s chicken. In most places in the U.S., one base sauce is used to make General Tso’s, sesame and orange chicken among other things.

James Little says:

It’s similar to sweet and sour. Just orange instead of plum.

What Is Life, Dude? says:

*drool*

Jonothan Doezer says:

And the food looks good too!! 😉

BreezyBeautyy says:

Oh my goodness, that looks amazing! I’m allergic to gluten, so I can’t eat much Chinese food anyway and haven’t for years. I will definitely have to try this 🙂

Eve Taylor says:

Turnagain Life, ola victor
there are soyfree soy sauce options on the internet, i’ve made one that was kinda similar to soy sauce. Just experiment 🙂 You could do this with seitan cubes for a slightly different result or firm Burmese tofu cubes. I imagine this would work on roasted crispy chickpeas too or a buffalo cauliflower recipe made into a Chinese orange cauliflower dish. Wow. I need to make that 🙂 I can’t have soy either, nor can I have gluten so I’m into all the subs.

BreezyBeautyy says:

Being allergic to soy must be so difficult, I feel like it’s in so much food now! Hopefully you can use some of the replacements people have suggested and make some bomb Chinese food 🙂

Shawn Darling says:

BreezyBeautyy I like kung pow chicken myself it’s the best. I also like Peking duck and general Sao

Eve Taylor says:

no probs, we’re in the same boat 🙂 hope you make sg amazing

Eve Taylor says:

BreezyBeautyy
it is becoming extremely difficult. Chocolate, glutenfree products and meat replacements likely contain soy or gluten. You wouldn’t even think there is wheat in things like veggie stock powder, jujube and even pringles :((( and being a glutenfree soyfree vegan is one of the biggest challenges of my life

but we’re trying 🙂

Cortney Jo says:

Guuuuurl! This used to be my favorite as well 😅😂😲 thank you for making this 🙏

Lindsay Hughen says:

This looks SO good! I’m definitely going to try this!!

Joseph Halpern says:

The sauce boss.  Seriously, that orange sauce looked amazing.  I thought you fried the tofu in too much oil and it would be soggy and not crispy but when I heard the crust on that tofu I was a believer.  I’m sorry for doubting you.  Can’t wait for your next video.

Kora says:

Just sat down with my food. Guess there’s’s always tomorrow to try this!

Scott Reacher says:

That looks amazing! Them looks like some good eats.

Michael Whittiker says:

As a baby vegan I get so excited when I get a Sarah’s Vegan Kitchen notification.

LexMarth says:

As an unborn vegan i love when my mom listens to Sarahs videos!

Michael Whittiker says:

Ha!

labella42071 says:

Michael Whittiker as a Granny Vegan 😜I love these videos too! 😂

Eve Taylor says:

me too. haha 🙂

Sarah Seguin says:

It’s like you know exactly what I’m craving! Every time! So excited to try this 🤤

Shayna Pietranton says:

I’ve been doing the cornstarch coating to my tofu lately too. I’ve discovered that you actually don’t have to fry it at all to get it crispy. It gets super crispy with no oil just in the oven. Make sure it’s really hot and let it go for about 20-30 min.

Heather Keenum says:

Shayna McDonald I did this today and it was awesome! Thanks for the idea for a lower fat version.

LaDolcevita says:

Shayna McDonald thank you for letting me know this! I was wondering the way thing!!!

Kimberlee G. says:

I usually use masa/corn flour (because I always forget to buy cornstarch from the store) to coat my tofu & always gets it nice & crispy & pumps up the flavor 👌🏾

Mary Ciulla says:

Thanks, Shayna, you answered a question I had about baking these without oil!

Milena K.E says:

Shayna McDonald thank u for the advice it’s healthier I’ll do that next time

Allie Jeanne says:

At the risk of sounding like a Super Creep(TM), I saw you in Sprouts the other day and it was sort of awesome? Didn’t want to bother you, but still! It was really cool.

Sarah's Vegan Kitchen says:

Allie Jeanne lol omg! I’m just wondering how much of a potato I looked. 😂 also I go to that sprouts wayyy too often.

Allie Jeanne says:

Oh my god, no not at all! I think you may have been looking at potatoes, but like… I looked like garbage. That was like 20% of why I didn’t say hello in the first place. (:

Also because I’m a super anxious and awkward person, so there was that part too.

savannah monturi says:

I have an extra pack of extra firm tofu & didn’t know what I wanted to make with it… until now 🙂 thank you Sarah!!

Just smile! says:

Yesss I need to learn more about tofu! Can you do a Mexican dish with tofu? Thank you I love your videos so so much!

James Little says:

Tofu takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with. I make tofu “chicken” enchiladas, and my family loves it.

Analisia Ensey says:

At this fresh mex place in my area, they have a tofu cooked in a tomato sauce that’s so yummy.

Annabelle Alpar says:

Beauty/30 Watch her ” How to Cook Tofu// oil free” and make that and instead chop the tofu into really small cubes and then mix chili peppers chopped up finely with some tomato sauce and cumin.

Mosca Froglover says:

Just smile! I am going to make this crispy tofu but I will be adding Doña Maria Mole sauce to mine. Making spanish rice and beans on the side 😁

Madeleine Matter says:

This looks incredible! So making this this weekend

Caitlin Shoemaker says:

I was just thinking about making orange tofu!!!!

Sarah's Vegan Kitchen says:

Do it!!!! 😀

Shannie says:

That looks soooo delicious. Loved hearing the crunch! 😀

Rachel Rambles says:

Oh my goodness I just made this and I’m having it right now it is so amazing! Panda Express orange chicken was my favorite as a teenager and I haven’t had it in years and this tastes even better than I remember that tasting! Thank you for this – I love your videos ☺️

Sarah's Vegan Kitchen says:

glad you enjoyed!

Gretchen's Vegan Bakery says:

Sarah this looks sooooo good!
