Personally, I think salad should only refer to lettuce salads. The odd tuna salad, pasta salad, potato salad, are all deceiving and to me are gross.

Lettuce is the only way to eat salad to me. I love leaves and fresh veggies for a salad. Though I will say watermelon feta salads and caprese are good, and my only concession to non lettuce salad. Granted you can throw in lettuce with theses it's often made without.
